Description:

PORTRAIT OF TWO HORSES AT AN OPEN GATE - British-born Stainforth is perhaps remembered best for his work painting the horses of Australia. The publication of Racehorses in Australia with Paintings by Martin Stainforth cemented his place as an equine artist, and the publication remains an important reference work today. Returning to England in 1930, he was commissioned to do many notable portraits including Hyperion for the 17th Earl of Derby and also works for King George V. Stainforth spent some time in America, and was commissioned to paint War Admiral, Sir Archy, and Man o' War among others.
