Oil on board Provenance: Frost and Reed Sir Edwin Landseer (British, 1802-1873) The son of an engraver, Landseer was something of a prodigy, and his artistic talents were recognized at a very young age. He was selected as an "honorary exhibitor" at the Royal Academy at 13; elected as an associate at 24; and elected as an academician at the Royal Academy in 1831 at the age of 29. He was knighted in 1850 and was later elected president of the Royal Academy, but he turned the offer down. Landseer was known for being a portrait, animal, and sporting painter using mostly oils. Later in life, he was produced some sculptures, mostly in bronze. Landseer died in 1873 in England.
