Oil on canvas Signed, dated ‘50. Provenance: The Chenery/Tweedy family. Bred and owned by Cristopher Chenery, Hill Prince was sired by Princequillo, a great racehorse in his own right, and out of the Blue Hen mare Hildene. Hill Prince won the Babylon Handicap, the Cowdin Stakes, and the World's Playground Stakes as a 2-year-old. In his 3-year-old campaign he was victorious in the Preakness Stakes, American Derby, Jerome Handicap, Jockey Club Gold Cup, Wood Memorial, Withers Stakes, and Sunset Handicap, as well as running second in the Kentucky Derby. At 4 and 5 years old, Hill Prince won the New York and San Marco handicaps. Hill Prince was named champion 2- and 3-year-old male, Horse of the Year in 1950, and Champion handicap horse in 1951. Hill Prince stood at Claiborne Farm, where he sired 23 stakes winners, including the 1957 American champion 3-year-old Filly Bayou, as well as Coaching Club American Oaks winner Levee and Gardenia Stakes winner Pepperwood. He was more important as a broodmare sire and was the damsire of Hall of Fame horses Shuvee and Dark Mirage. Richard Stone Reeves (American, 1919-2005) Quite simply, Reeves is among the very top of American equine portraiture artists, ranking him with such names as Edward Troye, Henry Stull, and Franklin Voss. A direct descendant of 19th-century portrait painter Thomas Sully, Reeves was trained at the Syracuse University School of Fine Art. His commissions included hundreds of the most famous racehorses from around the world.
