Oil on canvas Signed. Hesketh Raoul Lejarderay Millais (British, 1901-1999) Usually referred to as Raoul or "Liony," Millais was a portrait painter, equestrian artist, and sportsman. The grandson of Sir John Everett Millais and the son of John Guille Millais, the artist inherited his talent and his love of animals and hunting from his family. Best known for his equestrian art and the Spanish paintings he created when he accompanied Ernest Hemingway, Millais, like his contemporary Sir Alfred Munnings, was a staunch opponent of Modernism.
