Description:

IRISH LAD AFTER WINNING THE METROPOLITAN HANDICAP 1904 American turf master John E. Madden, always eager to sell a young horse, met up with Harry Payne Whitney and Herman B. Duryea in the bar at the old Morris Park clubhouse. By the end of that 1902 encounter, H. P. Whitney had his first racehorse, a colt named Irish Lad. Racing for Whitney and Duryea under the nom de course Westbury Stable, Irish Lad became one of America's best colts at two and three and continued as a major handicap winner.
